FILLING the void left by the disbandment of the Sydney Wind Quintet in 1994, the New Sydney Wind Quintet was founded in 2004 by flautist Bridget Bolliger. The group comprises Sydney Symphony members oboist Alexandre Oguey and clarinettist Francesco Celata, plus bassoonist Andrew Barnes and horn player Andrew Bain. This first disc (available via bridget@nswq.com.au) is a high-quality recording of some of Australia’s finest wind players. Included is a premiere recording of a work by Ross Edwards, Incantations . Close your eyes and you could be at a waterhole deep in the outback. Paul Juon’s Quintet for winds in B flat major ends the disc with a beautiful, round sound. Described by many as the missing link between Tchaikovsky and Stravinsky, Juon’s music is full of folk-like melodies performed with a lovely lyricism.
